A good Staffordshire pearlware figure c.1820 with a theatrical and literary theme which features Mark Antony, recumbent on a rectangular marbleised base. Brightly deecorated 'in the round' with overglaze enamels- decoration to front and reverse. Open bottomed. This piece represents the character Antony in the play 'Antony and Cleopatra' by William Shakespeare. It is based on real events of ancient times, a tragedy and also a story of passionate love. It tells the story of an affair between Mark Antony, one of the three who rule Rome after the assassination of Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.
