A very small Chetham & Woolley Feldspathic Stoneware, Smear Glaze Jug c.1810. Of typically fine quality, this little jug is well modelled and crisply decorated with different scenes containing Cherubs. The cherub with the lion represents man’s control of the Earth, the two cherubs lighting torches represent fire. The third is the seated Venus playing with Eros and is generally called “sportive love”.  

Chetham and Wooley who were based in Longton, Staffordshire in 1793 until 1821. The partnership was responsible for developing a new ceramic body, semi-transparent stoneware, properly termed Fieldspathic Stoneware.  This piece is unmarked
