A First Period Worcester Porcelain Chocolate Cup & Stand c.1770. Both the cup and stand are wide, double ogee in section with fluted rims, finely decorated with turquiose blue borders and gilding . Typical serpent scroll shape handle.
It should be noted that in the 18th century, there was no real distinction between coffee and chocolate cups, the latter perhaps being a little larger in size. They came with deep saucers as shown here, and perhaps optional covers. They also appear with also either one or two handles.
