A Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester Porcelain Crested Coffee Cup & Saucer

A superb Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester Crested Coffee Cup & Saucer from a tea service made for Sir Roger Gresley & Lady Sophia c.1821. Very finely decorated with a deep blue band of cobalt blue and opulent raised gilding with scrolls and anthemions. East piece superbly decorated with the family crest of Lady Sophia and Sir Roger Gresley and the latin motto ‘’ melyore fyde quant fortuna’’ which translates as ‘’better than fortune.’’ 

Roger Gresley was an English author and Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1835 to 1837 as MP for South Derbyshire. He was a well known London dandy and gambled away much of his fortune!
