A Derby porcelain plate from the Pendock Barry Service c. 1805. The central well decorated with the arms of Barry within a garland of oak leaves and acorns, the deep blue ground richly gilt with stars and circles, the border painted with pink roses and buds against a black enamel ground, probably by William Billingsley, 24.2cm diam, crown, crossed batons and D mark in gold

This important service was first recorded when it appeared at auction in 1894, where it reportedly made the huge sum of £496. The nomenclature, dating and the artist responsible is discussed by Rachel C Denyer, Morgan C T Denyer and Howell G M Edwards, The Pendock Barry Porcelain Service, A Forensic Evaluation (2023). Although William Billingsley had left the Derby factory by the time of manufacture, the authors suggest that the roses were painted by him as an independent decorator whilst running his establishment at Torksey.

Condition: In good condition, with the rim completely re-gilded and with a clear lacquer applied to the border of roses. the gilt mark on the reverse is rubbed, but the gilding and enamel decoration to the centre of the plate and cavetto remains bright and clean.
