A rare Spode porcelain coffee can c.1815. Of Bute shape, decorated in pattern 1695 bat printed in gold onto a cobalt blue ground with two figures in a landscapes & further bands of gold decoration, this was introduced at Spode in 1811. This design can look very sumptuous & when new would have been sensational but it is rather prone to scratch damage unfortunately like all over-glaze decorated pieces. It would have been an expensive pattern to produce and it is believed that there were only four variations of these particular patterns produced in this manner by Spode
In 1810, Peter Warburton of the New Hall porcelain factory took out a Patent for printing landscapes and other designs from copper plates in gold and platinum, upon pottery and porcelain. This technique of bat printing was then employed by Spode c.1811.
Printed Spode mark in blue to the saucer along with pattern 1695 in red. Can unmarked.
Condition: Good with some wear to the gilding mainly around the rim.
