A Derby Coffee Can painted by Thomas 'Jockey' Hill c.1795

A fine and rare Derby cylindrical coffee can, with loop handle, painted in coloured enamels by Thomas 'Jockey' Hill with a named view 'Near Spondon, Derbyshire', within a gilt oval panel, beneath a gilt stiff leaf band, the interior rim with a gilt swag. Crowned crossed batons mark in blue, pattern number 459 and titled in blue beneath.

Thomas Hill, nicknamed ‘Jockey’ because he rode to a pony to work, joined the Derby factory in 1794. He had been influenced, whilst working at Chelsea, by Zachariah Boreman and was therefore a water-colour artist. 

Titled mark in blue to the base along with crown over the letter 'D' and crossed batons. Pattern 469 and impressed number 3.

Condition: Hairline cracks to the base. Slight scratch to the painted panel. Some scratches to the yellow ground.
